There is an internal extender when the adjustment system is inside your trekking pole. Romain, our pole engineer, shows you how to use it effectively.
You acquired a pair of poles? WELL DONE! Now adjust them to the correct size so that you can use them during your treks. Poles with internal extenders are very classic: that's when you do not see the adjustment system! It's like not seeing what you are doing, so you need a helping hand.
Be careful, you have to turn the section, not the black ring of the pole.
First, to unlock your poles, you will have to loosen your internal stop to release the pole's tubings.
turn counterclockwise as shown above. the left hand holds the upper blade and remains immobile. the right hand turns the lower blade.
Now that you know how high you want to adjust your pole, just turn the tube clockwise as above. if you notice that the blades slide, do not hesitate to screw it more firmly until it no longer slides.
If you find that your blocker is turning in a vacuum as you screw it, do not panic. This is because your extender is too loose. This can happen in a few situations. I'll tell you what to do!
On our trekking and hiking poles, we use 2 types of extenders, depending on where they are manufactured.
In both cases, the first thing to do is to completely unscrew the pole to make the extender visible.
If your extender is in red as above, the following two photos show you what to do.
Simply tighten the extender by hand. take one or two hikes.
Then re-insert the lower section of the pole into the upper section. you must feel that the extender is rubbing against the upper section.
If the extender is missing from the blade when you unscrew it, it is because it stayed in the pole's blade. this is the other type of extender. it is grey in colour on the picture in the upper blade.
In this case, it is necessary to put the lower blade in the higher blade, push the lower blade and screw at the same time, to screw the extender into place on the lower blade.
When adjusting the length, do not go beyond the stop line as pictured above. Beyond this limit the pole could snap while in use and you may be injured.
If your poles need to be stored in the closet for a prolonged period, (in winter for example), leave the blockers un-screwed. This way you maintain their locking power. And when they get back into use, still make sure they are well adjusted.
