Crampons come with several types of binding systems: strap-on, semi-auto, or step-in. Your choice of binding depends on your mountaineering boots.
Boots without a welt
The strap-on binding system is the only one that can be used with boots without a welt.
Boots with a rear welt
This is the most common type of boot for general mountaineering. Crampons with "semi-auto" bindings are recommended for this type of boot.
Boots with a front and rear welt
For this type of boot, which is generally very stiff and intended for ice climbing, you should go for a "step-in" binding system. Step-in bindings are also the suitable choice for ski boots.
Are you about to head out onto a glacier for the first time? Caiman crampons are what you need. They are designed to be used on slope angles from 0 to 40°. With 10 points, they grip well and are lightweight.
Makalu crampons are a perfect choice! With 12 points, they are heavier than the Caiman, but they grip perfectly on slopes from 0 to 70°. They will take you over snow and ice.
Vampire crampons are great for ice climbing. Their front points are made to grip on slopes of 45 to 90°. They are versatile, converting to mono-points for more precision.
We recommend aluminium crampons; this ultra-light component is ideal for snow but will not stand up to rocky terrain
