The largest of the Balearic Islands is a trekking hotspot in Spain. The Serra de Tramuntana is the leading destination for hikers in the archipelago. Listed by UNESCO since 2011, this mountain range has a huge variety of landscapes: steep cliffs, pine forests or high mountain peaks such as Puig Major or Puig de Massanella. Approximately 283 kilometres in length, the GR221 follows the route of some very old paths that cross the Serra de Tramuntana from west to east. Recently signposted according to official standards, this very authentic hiking trail is bordered by dry stone walls built by hand in days gone by. It is for this reason that this route is nicknamed "Ruta de pedra en sec".
